It’s Not Me, It’s You: When Is It Time To Start Job Hunting?

Quitting your job probably feels scary, and like you’re about to jump off a giant precipice with no end in sight. If you’ve invested a lot of time and energy into a company, you may also feel reluctant to leave, or even consider job hunting in the first place. While big career transitions aren’t something you should jump into, and changing jobs isn’t the magic wand that will solve all your problems, sometimes taking the plunge will land you in a much better place.

Wondering if it’s time to start job hunting? Here are the top four signs it’s time to start looking for employment elsewhere:

Surrounded By Negativity

Everyone’s coworkers complain a little bit sometimes, but does it seem like that’s all you hear? If no one ever has anything good or positive to say, that type of work environment can be very draining, and can negatively affect your performance over time. When your office is complaint central, you’ll never do your best work, and eventually you’ll find yourself as unhappy as everyone else.

Dread Going To Work

Do you quake in fear every morning as you dress for work, groan through your commute, and grit your teeth through your workday? Far too many people do this, and don’t realize that these are clear signs that you aren’t where you’re supposed to be. Your job shouldn’t make you unhappy. If you dread your workday, you’re likely not in the right position for your skillset and passions.

Makes You Sick

We’ve all been there. After months of long hours and giving it your all, your extra-demanding position starts to take its toll, and the sick days stack up. If you find yourself neglecting your health for the sake of your job, that’s a red flag. Since you give your best at work, your employer should give you time to take care of yourself so that you can continue giving your best for years to come. If that’s not happening, that’s clear sign it’s time to start job hunting.

No Passion

Even if everything looks fine on paper, and there’s nothing wrong with your job, you might just feel passionless and discontented. And that’s not a bad thing. That just means you’re ready for a change. You may be overqualified and ready to move up, so you’re likely feeling the chafe of a job description that’s just a little too small for your skills. Or, you could need to move laterally into a position that compliments your skillset. Either way, if you’re not passionate about what you do every day, it may be time to seek a change.
